FAQ
01.
What does Zero Industrial do?

We develop, finance, build, own, and operate industrial heat electrification projects. We deliver turnkey electrification infrastructure that can provide cleaner, lower-cost power and thermal energy under long-term agreements.

02.
What is your business model?

We operate under a build, own, and operate model. Zero Industrial develops, finances, constructs, and operates turnkey electrification projects for our customers — with no upfront capital required from customers.

We take full responsibility from development through long-term operations, including engineering, permitting, construction, operations and maintenance. Customers enter into long-term heat purchase agreements, allowing them to access lower-cost, cleaner energy without owning or operating the equipment.

Our incentives are fully aligned with project performance — we only succeed when the system delivers reliable energy and measurable economic value to your facility.

03.
How are you different from equipment vendors, EPCs, ESCOs, or utilities?

Most energy providers build and walk away. We develop, finance, build, own, and operate the infrastructure at your facility — and stay accountable for its performance for the life of the contract.

  • Unlike OEMs, we don’t sell a product — we’re technology-agnostic and select or combine the solutions that deliver the strongest techno-economic outcome, whether thermal storage, electrode boilers, heat pumps, or a hybrid.
  • Unlike EPCs, we don’t build and exit.
  • Unlike traditional ESCOs, we provide the capital and retain ownership under a long-term Heat Purchase Agreement.
  • And unlike utilities, we aren’t tied to a single fuel source or rate structure.

Think of us as an independent power producer (IPP) for industrial heat.

04.
Can Zero Industrial support my facility?

If your facility uses process heat, we can likely deliver it more reliably and at lower cost than your current setup. We work across a broad range of industrial sectors, including food and beverage, ethanol and distilling, chemicals, advanced manufacturing, and agriculture.

Every project is designed around the site’s specific thermal load, operating profile, and local energy market dynamics. Whether your facility requires steam, hot water, or other forms of process heat, we evaluate the full techno-economic picture to determine the optimal configuration.

05.
Where do you operate?

Zero Industrial currently develops projects across the United States and Canada, prioritizing regions where market structures, pricing, and policy incentives support strong economics for industrial electrification.

Our site selection is driven by techno-economic fundamentals — not just geography.

06.
How can you provide steam for less than what I’m currently paying?

Three drivers lower the cost of heat:

  1. Market-based power procurement – We use off-peak and wholesale electricity pricing, intelligent load management, and thermal storage to lower the blended cost of power.
  2. High efficiency – Electrified systems run at far higher efficiencies than combustion, cutting energy input per unit of useful heat.
  3. Incentives – We monetize federal and state incentives and build them into project economics.

Together, these let us offer long-term heat pricing competitive with — and often below — fossil fuel alternatives, with lower emissions and less price volatility.

07.
What happens if the grid goes down?

Reliability is central to our system design.

For projects with thermal energy storage (TES), we size on-site storage to maintain heat supply through grid disruptions — in many cases sustaining thermal production through multi-hour outages.

Modern industrial facilities already depend heavily on electricity — control systems, pumps, conveyors, and instrumentation all run on grid power. Our systems don’t add a new category of risk; they operate within the same reliability framework you already manage.

Where appropriate, existing gas-fired boilers can remain in place as supplemental or backup capacity, providing an additional layer of operational flexibility during the transition.

08.
How do you fund your projects?

Zero Industrial provides the full development and construction capital for each project.
We finance projects using a combination of equity, project-level debt, and tax credit monetization.

Customers make no upfront capital investment — we fund, structure, and manage the entire capital stack.

09.
Where does the electricity come from?

Power sourcing is customized for each project. Depending on the market, this can include utility tariffs, wholesale market procurement, structured supply contracts, or renewable energy arrangements such as direct PPAs or renewable energy certificates.

As part of our site analysis, we evaluate local market structures, pricing dynamics, and policy frameworks to determine the most cost-effective and sustainable strategy for sourcing electricity.

Our approach is flexible and market-driven — designed to optimize both economic and emissions outcomes.

10.
What solutions do you use?

We deploy a proven set of electrified solutions: thermal energy storage (TES), electrode boilers, and mechanical vapor recompression (MVR) heat pumps — used individually or in hybrid configurations.

All are commercially proven and operating at scale today — we don’t rely on experimental systems.

For each project, we evaluate your thermal load, operating profile, and local energy market conditions to determine the optimal combination and configuration.

Our approach is technology-agnostic and performance-driven.

11.
How do you pick the right technology for my site?

We use proprietary analytical tools to run a detailed techno-economic evaluation of your facility. This means modeling your thermal load, operating schedule, local market dynamics, grid capacity, available incentives, and site constraints.

Based on this analysis, we design a tailored system configuration optimized for reliability, long-term cost performance, and operational fit — not a one-size-fits-all solution.

12.
What is the scope of your services?

We manage the full project lifecycle.

Zero Industrial is responsible for:

  • Site assessment and solution selection
  • Engineering and design
  • Permitting
  • Equipment procurement
  • Construction and commissioning
  • Long-term operations and maintenance

You receive reliable thermal energy delivered to your existing steam header — we manage everything behind it.

13.
How does the contract work? What am I actually paying for?

You enter into a long-term Heat Purchase Agreement (HPA). Under the HPA, you pay for the thermal energy delivered to your facility — similar to how you pay for natural gas today, but structured to provide greater price stability and, in many cases, lower total cost.

The agreement can be structured as:
• An all-in HPA, or
• A tolling arrangement, depending on local market conditions and your preferences

The HPA price includes everything required to deliver heat — capital investment, equipment, operations, maintenance, and performance management. There are no separate capital or service charges.

Available federal and state incentives are incorporated into the project structure and reflected in the heat price.

14.
What savings can I expect?

In general, customers see material savings in their all-in heat costs compared to their existing fossil-fuel baseline.

The magnitude of savings depends on your current fuel costs, local electricity pricing, the system configuration, and available incentives. In markets with strong power economics and supportive policy frameworks, savings can be substantial, alongside greater long-term price stability.

As part of our initial site evaluation, we provide a detailed techno-economic analysis outlining projected savings before moving forward.

15.
How long does the whole process take?

Most projects move from initial feasibility through construction and commissioning in approximately 18 to 36 months.

Timeline depends on site complexity, permitting requirements, interconnection processes, and equipment lead times.

We advance projects as efficiently as possible while maintaining rigorous engineering, safety, and execution standards.

16.
How long do these systems last?

The core equipment is designed for a service life of 40 years or more.

Heat Purchase Agreements are typically structured for 10 to 20 years, providing long-term cost certainty while we retain responsibility for operating and maintaining the asset over its full useful life.

17.
Where does the equipment go? Will it disrupt my operations?

These systems typically have a compact footprint and can often be integrated within existing industrial space at your facility.

We design and sequence every project for zero interruption — construction, tie-ins, and commissioning are planned and coordinated with your team so production keeps running.

If on-site space is tight, we evaluate adjacent siting and interconnection options to integrate seamlessly with your existing steam infrastructure.

18.
Who operates and maintains the equipment?

We do.

Operations and maintenance are fully included in your Heat Purchase Agreement.

Zero Industrial monitors system performance continuously and is responsible for all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.

You don’t need to add headcount, manage new vendors, or develop in-house technical expertise. We retain full operational responsibility for the infrastructure.
